The Fall and Decline of the Fishing Empire

One of the first articles we published here in Backcasts had to do with the lack of new children being introduced to flyfishing and what that means for our sport.  See Passing on the Joy of Fly Fishing to read that article.  Today the NY Times has further validated this crisis, blaming lack of time and parents too busy to introduce their children to fishing.

This makes me angry that we have parents that don't want to take the time to teach their children to fish.  I strongly urge fellow fishermen to participate in a program this summer or fall that introduces a child to fishing.
Many local Trout Unlimited clubs are sponsoring youth programs to introduce children to fishing.  Our Great Bay TU chapter is sponsoring one: www.greatbaytu.org/kidscamp.php
If the parents of these children won't introduce them to fishing, the fishermen of this world need to step up to the gravel bank and begin false casting!
The more children we recruit to our sport will mean more youth NOT getting involved in drugs and violence.
There is no greater sound than the sound of children's laughter floating across a flowing brook in the spring time.
Let's make this happen.
